‘Things You Never Get Taught…’ is a new series of free development workshops for creative practitioners, arts organisations and those who want to develop their cultural offer. This series focuses on essential skills that might be overlooked by formal arts education, such as writing funding applications and developing a career as a creative practitioner.
‘Things You Never Get Taught… How to Fund a Film and Media Project’ was due to be held in real life early 2020, but was in light of the pandemic was re-imagined as an online event, taking place on Zoom on Thursday 24 September 2020. Marking a turning point for the programme to be held online and made accessible to all in an archive of podcasts. A written transcript is also available.
The conversation was led by Southend-based artist and filmmaker Renee Vaughan Sutherland, with significant experience of working in the media production industry as a Creative Director. Renee is also the founder Greater than 11%, a series of channels that promote careers and roles within the creativity industries with the ambitious aim to increase diversity, whilst simultaneously championing awesome women.
Joining Renee was Thomas Wightman from the BFI NETWORK who explains about some of the funding and talent development opportunities available through BFI NETWORK and the wider ambition to support local filmmaking communities across the region.
This evening was one of Film Hub South East’s regional talent meet-ups. Whether you’re a first-time filmmaker, animator, writer or producer, these meet-ups are also a chance to meet each other, chat and share ideas. This event was kindly supported by BFI NETWORK and Film Hub South East, led by the Independent Cinema Office.
